The PYRY lamps take their name from a uniquely Finnish winter phenomenon: snow driven by strong wind, swirling intensely and reducing visibility. Conceived during Pått’s stay in Japan in 1972, the idea for a Finnish paper lamp became technically possible only in the 1990s with the introduction of energy- saving light sources. The PYRY pattern was first presented at the Habitare Fair in Helsinki in 1993. Each lampshade is handcrafted from paper applied in multiple wet layers onto a metal structure, resulting in light forms that balance delicacy and strength. Over the past 30 years, more than ten variations of PYRY and related Lumidesign lamps have been developed.
